The Bad Plus are a jazz trio in that they use standard weaponry -- piano, bass, drums -- and appear in established temples such as New York's Village Vanguard. They are also bad to the bone, hot players with hard-rock hearts: Their songbook bravado and grip of extreme dynamics are vividly caught in the poleaxed cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The Bad Plus also write their own tunes, such as the long, rapturous "Silence Is the Question." The answer, of course: Turn it up.
