Album Reviews

The Apples in Stereo have a guaranteed place in the heart of every bubblegum pop purist who believes music reached its zenith with the Beach Boys in the late Sixties. Had the Apples been around back then, they certainly would have been part of the team behind the Monkees, the Archies . . . or at least Josie and the Pussycats. It's fitting, then, that the creator of the modern-day cartoon The Powerpuff Girls found his muse in the Apples, basing an episode of the series around their effervescent "Signal in the Sky." That song is the focus of this EP, which opens with the version from the Powerpuff soundtrack and closes with a previously unreleased demo take. There's also a punky live rendition of the Beach Boys' "Heroes and Villains," and the ironic "If You Want to Wear a Hat," which bounces along on a Casio-laced rhythm track that could have been transported from the heyday of Eighties New Wave.
