The band, who released Retreat From The Sun on Geffen Records earlier this year, first launched onto the L.A. pop scene back in the early '90s, picking up steam with college radio around the country. They signed to Geffen in 1993 and released their self-titled debut to rave reviews. That dog's sound combined sweet harmonies with thrashing rhythm and jagged violin chords. In addition to Waronker, the band comprised singer/bassist Rachel Haden and her sister, Petra (who provided those jagged violin sounds as well as vocals) and drummer Tony Maxwell. They released one other album on Geffen - 1995's Totally Crushed Out -- that garnered them attention from the likes of Beck, Foo Fighters, Mazzy Star, Johnny Cash and Teenage Fanclub, who all in turn brought that dog out on the road with them.
The band also had a strong connection with the guys from
Weezer, with whom they recently played a Los
Angeles tribute show to Carli and Mykel Allen, the
co-presidents of the Weezer and that dog fan clubs who died in a
car crash in Colorado following a Weezer show in July. (Ari
