Like seemingly every other hip-hop and R&B producer with a half-dozen big-time credits, Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean has decided to grab the mike. On his first solo album, Swizz, who has made beats for Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and Beyoncé, raps with gruff, proficient braggadocio -- in other words, not exactly enough to carry an entire album. But despite some duff rhymes and a token piece of social conscience called "The Funeral," Swizz's skills as a track-builder come through on a handful of hot cuts: "It's Me, Bitches," a club hit built on stutter-step drums and ratchety sound effects, is one of this year's most winning singles. The music is hooky and pretty all over the place, with Swizz calling in Coldplay's Chris Martin for the atmospheric slow burner "Part of the Plan," sampling Bill Withers for the sunny "Take a Picture" and working up nickel-plated bounce for "Bust Ya Gunz." Ultimately, though, One Man Band Man proves what you already knew: Swizz knows how to rock a party.
