Album Reviews
Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek started a one-man trend of covers concept albums with his 2001 LP of mellowed-out AC/DC songs. Now the former Red House Painters frontman is offering up an entire CD of Modest Mouse tunes. Kozelek delves deeply into the Mouse catalog, leaning on earlier stuff and steering clear of their all-too-familiar 2004 breakout single, "Float On." Unfortunately, even the most arresting of Modest Mouse's songs are turned to breathy mush here; one track is barely distinguishable from the next. Where Mouse frontman Isaac Brock's vocals are compelling and creaky, Kozelek's vocals are sleepy and slurry.
