Album Reviews
On their fifth album, Staind are still getting angsty like it was 1999, dropping adenoidal harmonies and peddling a unique combo of AA-meeting ballads and fetal-position metal. Chapter V's "Paper Jesus" works up a thrashing groove, and on "Cross to Bear" singer Aaron Lewis digs deep for a lung-stretching battle with his guitarist. But it's when Staind crank down the sludge and slacken the tempos that things get heavy in a bad way. "Take This" and "King of All Excuses" are odiously anti-fun confessionals, and on "Right Here" Lewis goes falsetto to admit he's "got some imperfections," which is like Tony Montana admitting he did a little cocaine.
