Music industry stoners are continuing their crusade to legalize marijuana.|

Ten artists have already signed on to contribute tracks to Hempilation II, Steve Bloom, co-executive producer of the project and executive editor of High Times magazine, told JAMTV on Tuesday.

Willie Nelson, Gov't Mule, Spacehog, Tricky, Spearhead, Letters to Cleo, Dar Williams, Wayne Kramer and Long Beach Dub Allstars (featuring members of sublime) will all record cover tracks dealing with the subject of the wacky weed. Punk stronghold Mike Watt will record an original song, according to Bloom.

Hemp II, the follow-up to 1995's Hempilation: Freedom Is NORML, is tentatively slated for a September release and the project's coordinator is hoping that it will be as successful as its predecessor.

"[Hempilation] has succeeded in raising funds and awareness for NORML [National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws], which is essential to the organization's survival," Bloom said. "Hempilation gives people an opportunity to make a donation without having to put a check in the mail."

The first album, which featured songs by Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, Cypress Hill, 311, Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers and Widespread Panic, among others, has raised more than $100,000 and sold more than 100,000 copies since its release, Bloom said. By selling 10 times more than the average benefit album, Hempilation has essentially saved NORML from burning out.

Because Bloom and his co-producers -- NORML's Eric Steenstra and Capricorn Record's Philip Walden, Jr. -- have had more time to work on the second album, they are gathering a broader spectrum of artists to create a better mix of songs.

"Expect to see a wider cross section, with more British acts, more women and a few red-hot names to sign on soon," Bloom said. (Ari Bendersky)
