(NEW YORK) - Nearly 1,000 bands, 7,000 registrants, 500
journalists, 50 panels and 11 films are scheduled for CMJ
MusicFest '97, a four-day event focusing on alternative
culture and the influence of music on the future. The festival runs
Wednesday-Saturday in more than 60 Manhattan locales. |The confab,
whose attendance and importance to the music industry grows with
each passing year, will feature such up-and-comers -- and label
priorities -- as Daft Punk, Sneaker Pimps, Aphex Twin,
Super Chunk, Cornershop, Catherine Wheel, Mansun, Bettie Serveert,
Geraldine Fibbers, Smoking Popes, G. Love & Special Sauce,
Death in Vegas, the Crystal Method and many others.
Organizers said the CMJ festival, approaching its 20th anniversary,
has been able to not only sustain but propel its success even
though the overall music industry has been in a nearly
unprecedented, yet universally acknowledged, slump.
