DezzyRamdeen writes:
The Smashing Pumpkins: Tarantula
One of the most critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s, The Smashing Pumpkins, are due to debut their new album ZEITGEIST on July 10th (Martha's Music/Reprise ) . This will be their first LP of new material since Billy Corgan's The Future Embrace released in 2000. The band is without James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky and that missing element is obvious in the new track, Tarantula. Jeff Schroeder, on guitars and Ginger Reyes on bass has been added to the lineup to fill some very big Pumpkin shoes. Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin have done a good job making the new single as cohesive to the sound of the pumpkins as they can. For avid fans still clad in plaid shirts and ripped up jeans (Can you blame them? The brilliant rock trend of the 1990s can never be repeated), this album has been seven long years in the making. Would it be enough to have Billy Corgan and the nostalgic pumpkins put out something feasible and just mediocre?
Tarantula is reminiscent of the early pumpkin days. The single does rock. It even takes you back a little, to when grunge ruled the world and bands had talent. We can only hope that ZEITGEIST offers some of the same early metal and post punk influences that shaped the sound we came to love and recognize as that of The Smashing Pumpkins.
Tour dates have been announced at headlining major European festivals with eleven dates. Two dates have been announced in Canada. All of the ten shows in NC at the Orange Peel, and the eleven shows in SF at The Fillmore have all been sold out. Tickets are still available in the US for their headlining festival appearances at the Live Earth benefit in NJ and at the Virgin Festivals in Washington, DC
