On their full-length debut, Silversun Pickups, a quartet from L.A.'s trendy Silver Lake neighborhood, show all that's possible when the California sun shines on indie-rock shoegazers. After the fuzzy, Pixies-ish dreamscape of the opener, "Melatonin," things take off with "Well Thought Out Twinkles," a surge of guitar squalls and male-female vocals that sounds like what might have happened if the Smashing Pumpkins had driven their ice cream cart out West. The Pickups' grandiose rock owes a great debt to its Chicago forebears "Waste It On" rips the "Rhinoceros" bass line, and "Lazy Eye," in particular, could be an outtake from Siamese Dream but the L.A. kids seem to be having fun in a way that Billy Corgan and company rarely could.

great album, with its very smashing pumpkins feel to it. strangely enough, i honestly thought, the first time i heard the band, that it was a female fronted group, since the lead has a kinda feminine voice to him. even so, the album is still pretty damn good even though it sounds like it's in the wrong decade.

Hey Dumb Ass, you say: ""Waste It On" rips the "Rhinoceros" bass line"

If you don't know the song you are referencing don't bother. I am guessing you meant to say: ""Waste It On" rips the "Crush" bass line", thought even if so it is not obvious to anyone who doesn't own "Gish"... Which you obviously don't. Pathetic, I thought you record shills were required to own any Butch Vig produced work.

Keep working on that new Justin Timberlake review and you'll get your paycheck even if you mistakenly say "track 8 is a blatant rip off of Pachelbel's Cannon in C" or whatever remote name you pull out of that big mushy white butt of yours.

I can't stop playing it. Full stop.

As well as the perfect 'Lazy Eye', 'Common Reactor' and 'Rusted Wheel' are on high rotation at my place. I cannot get enough of their grungy, Grohl like vocals. And along with the film clip for 'Lazy Eye', the whole experience of this band is amazing!

I would definitly go out and get it if I were you.

This disk hasn't left my CD player since I got it nearly two months ago. When I first heard the SSPU's, I immediatly thought it was a new Smashing Pumpkins song... I was happy when I realized I was wrong... can't have too much of a good thing, err... sound! I highly encourage you to buy, burn, whatever... get this disk!

The only thing better than this CD, is their live performance! Easily the best thing I've seen in 07! That drummer is an android... he has to be, he just has to be!

Good thing I've ripped the CD into my iTunes library, otherwise I would've worn out the disc from playing it so much. The band and this CD are THAT good!

Loved the whole album but my favorites are "Well Thought Out Twinkle" & "Lazy Eye". Can't wait to see them at the Troubadour on Aug 17th.
