Album Reviews
Since arriving on the scene with their 1999 debut, The Whole Shebang, the trio of sisters known as SheDaisy have been lauded for their complex vocal harmonies and slammed for not being "country" enough. Putting out a remix album last year didn't exactly help their cause. Their second CD, Knock on the Sky, adds more fuel to that fire -- when fiddles do appear, they seem to be an afterthought -- but the good news is that the songs are so well-crafted that it doesn't matter much. Each track on the CD was written or co-written by SheDaisy's Kristyn Osborn, and her confessional, highly personal lyrics are marvels of depth and detail, creating tiny, perfect snapshots of lust ("Turn Me On"), regret ("Mine All Mine"), despair ("I Wish I Were the Rain") and love ("Rush"). Add the sisters' sublime vocal arrangements, and you've got music that speaks both to the heart and to the head -- a prospect more satisfying than a thousand bland country paeans to everlasting love. If the move towards pop is inevitable, don't knock SheDaisy for making it smart and sexy.
