In the grand tradition of bands such as Pink Floyd, the Who and the Flaming Lips, New York-via-Dallas trio Secret Machines conjure a vibe that's at once intergalactic and terrestrial on their second full-length, Ten Silver Drops. It's a tricky balance, but when it works -- as on "Lightning Blue Eyes" and "All At Once (It's Not Important)," among others -- the band's mix of heavy, propulsive rhythms, Brandon Curtis' eerily dispassionate vocals and a whole lot of psychedelic synth and guitar vamping approaches something close to extraordinary. The Machines' laser-light-show-ready atmospherics don't entirely compensate for the lack of a single as catchy as their last album's "Nowhere Again." But Ten Silver Drops' undulating beats and melodic fog make the album the perfect soundtrack for illicit make-out sessions.

Whoa! Just when you thought you had a band pegged... Ten Silver Drops is a BIIIIIIG step in a different direction for TSM. But from the start of 'Alone, Jealous and Stoned' through '1000 Seconds' this is just a really great disc. The brothers Curtis are very into what they do, and it shows in their vision for the band, the bands sound and what they do for their fans. Josh Garza is one of the hardest hitting drummers on the planet, and the only other person I've seen hit is kit so hard is John Bonham. On the Ten Silver Drops tour the band has choosen to perform in the round, and let me tell you, it's worth whatever they charge to see them, they are that good. Stand out tracks on Ten Silver Drops include; Alone, Jealous and Stoned, 'Lightning Blue Eyes' 'Daddy's In The Doldrums' and 'I Hate Pretending' all flow nicely and capture TSM's live sound quite well, and if you've seen them on this tour you'll agree they have nailed it on the disc. If you liked 'Now Here Is Nowhere' or 'The Road Leads Where It's Led' you are certain to enjoy Ten Silver Drops. NOW GO GET IT! And see The Secret Machines on tour, you will be blown away....
