In the grand tradition of bands such as Pink Floyd, the Who and the Flaming Lips, New York-via-Dallas trio Secret Machines conjure a vibe that's at once intergalactic and terrestrial on their second full-length, Ten Silver Drops. It's a tricky balance, but when it works -- as on "Lightning Blue Eyes" and "All At Once (It's Not Important)," among others -- the band's mix of heavy, propulsive rhythms, Brandon Curtis' eerily dispassionate vocals and a whole lot of psychedelic synth and guitar vamping approaches something close to extraordinary. The Machines' laser-light-show-ready atmospherics don't entirely compensate for the lack of a single as catchy as their last album's "Nowhere Again." But Ten Silver Drops' undulating beats and melodic fog make the album the perfect soundtrack for illicit make-out sessions.
