Album Reviews
Perhaps the most illustrious group ever influenced by Stars on 45, Scissor Sisters are one of the most improbable and endearing success stories of recent years. In America, even in their native New York, they're some sort of underground band, whereas in Europe they're major stars, the biggest pansexual camp-pop carnival since Abba. Ta-Dah is disco that could have been designed by that guy Kayne on Project Runway - all pageant-queen razzle-dazzle in the vein of their 2004 hit, the Elton John homage "Take Your Mama." Every song is rooted in some long-gone Seventies AM-radio hit, from Leo Sayer ("I Don't Feel Like Dancin' ") to Glen Campbell ("I Can't Decide"), doing for disco what the New Pornographers do for rock & roll. "Paul McCartney" doesn't sound much like the guy from Wings - more like Peaches and Herb in their "Shake Your Groove Thing" period. But a title like "She's My Man" says it all.
