Album Reviews
Back in the late Eighties, Schoolly D was hailed as an authentic, scary voice of urban life. Fifteen years later, we can see he was inventing the myths of gangsta rap: These twelve old-school tracks usually have just an echoing drum machine and some scratching behind Schoolly as he talks about gold chains, Gucci watches and guns. Schoolly's voice and his raps get monotonous, but in small doses he has some kick -- that's why he's been sampled by the Beastie Boys and the Chemical Brothers, among others. The best track is "Saturday Night," where Schoolly's mom pulls a gun on him.
