(MELBOURNE, Australia) - Savage Garden looks to make a strong showing at next month's ARIA awards, Australia's equivalent to the Grammys. The Brisbane-based duo has been nominated in half the awards' 26 categories, which were announced yesterday at ceremonies in Sydney and Melbourne. The ARIAs will take place Sept. 22 at Sydney's Capitol Theatre, where Savage Garden, Tina Arena, and Silverchair are among those set to perform. The show will be broadcast by the Ten Network and, in Asia, through Channel V. Sponsors are the Brashs retail chain, Sony Australia, and Nintendo. "I Want You," Savage Garden's debut release, has sold 1.8 million copies worldwide, according to the act's label, Roadshow Music. The album is handled by Sony Music in a number of international markets, including the U.S. Other ARIA multiple nominees are Polydor's Powderfinger and Spiderbait, with seven nominations each, and previous winner Silverchair (Murmur/Epic/Sony), with six. Nick Cave & the BadSeeds (Mute/Liberation/Festival), Paul Kelly (White/Mushroom/Festival), and Human Nature (Columbia/Sony) all have four nominations.
