Album Reviews
Sporting a name inspired by guys like Lt. Stitchie and General Echo, Major Lazer appears to be a party-starting dancehall-reggae soldier with an old-school bent. In fact, he's a fantasy-baseball composite cooked up by producers Diplo and Switch (M.I.A., Santigold) with a fresh crop of Jamaican microphone fiends and kindred spirits. Gun nut Einstein trades XXX rhymes with Philly art girl Amanda Blank, while Brooklyn's Jah Dan keeps it rootsy. The biggest fun is hearing Diplo and Switch go off the leash, mixing surf guitar and horse whinnies, bong burbles and air horns. By the end, they're Auto-Tuning a baby's wail, clearly high enough, artistically, to try anything.
