Album Reviews
Of all the African artists who enjoyed crossover success during the 1980s, Malian singer Salif Keita has had the longest string of disappointing efforts -- plush, fusiony affairs that lacked anything resembling melody. His largely acoustic Moffou is a return to form. This is the way Keita's glorious voice works best: singing hymnlike songs, bouncing over
gently insistent beats, swept up in grand exchanges with his female backing choir.
