Rush vs. Rolling Stone: A Sampling of Reader Letters

Posted Jul 10, 2008 8:59 AM

Over the past 30 years, Rush fans have defended the Canadian trio in the pages of the magazine and on our site. Here's a selection of what we've received.

"Rolling Stone seems intent on casting Rush's albums into the two-star void (Records, RS 381). You frown upon any band that doesn't acknowledge any influence from the Sixties, either verbally or musically. How can Rush be criticized for making the music on Signals, its new album, more mainstream? Wasn't that the prime motivation behind virtually every Beatles album until Rubber Soul? "Sounds like Number One to me," George Martin would say. You also comment on Geddy Lee's ability (or inability) to play the synthesizer. Listen to John Lennon's organ solo on "I'm Down." It's hardly a technical wonder. Don't get me wrong, for I'm very much the Beatlemaniac, but I'm also an admirer of Rush's. Why such a double standard?"

Why does RS hate Rush so much? Obviously blinded by a false ideology. How facist.

Sorry RS if Rush doesn't fit this outdated and preconceived idea of what YOU think is cool(pretentious). This is post millenium 2008 and Rush has not only set the bar but they define the modern progressive sound. Obviously, by the looks of their audience a whole new generation is discovering their UNDISPUTED talent. Oh yeah it's very unlikely that any of them will die of a heroin overdose either. That's soooooooo UNCOOL!!!! Are you listening great scott! RUSH ROCKS, DEAL WITH IT!!!
