Album Reviews
Ringo Starr is stealthily working on a worthy late career with modestly ambitious albums such as 1998's Vertical Man and the brand-new Ringo Rama. The Fabs are never far from Starr's mind on Ringo Rama: The arrangements and production often evoke the multitextured fun-house pop of the post-Revolver Beatles, and in the course of the album he references George Harrison (the sweetly elegiac "Never Without You"), John Lennon (on the pop confection "Imagine Me There") and Paul McCartney (with the homespun "English Garden"). Hard-core Beatles fans will no doubt be verklempt over this goody bag. Mr. Starkey, once again you've passed the audition.
