Hip-hop and mall rock have all but replaced dance pop on American airwaves, but every once in a while a Euro-style club mash-up breaks through. Barbados-born emigre Rihanna's huge dancehall pop hit last year, "Pon De Replay," was savvy and sexy, and her new smash, "SOS," is even more so. Singing a snaky Destiny's Child-like melody around synth riffs and machine beats from Soft Cell's Eighties classic "Tainted Love," Rihanna proves America still appreciates clever pop when it hears it. Like her filler-packed debut album, this similar but superior follow-up doesn't deliver anything else as ingenious as its lead single: Lightweight dancehall and R&B jams lack the single's ear-bending boldness. But the burning rock guitar of "Kisses Don't Lie" and haunted strings of "Unfaithful" help make A Girl Like Me much more likable.

"A Girl Like Me" is a very fun and original album with a lot of
variety. Dancehall hits like "SOS" and "Break It Off" are fan
favourites. The song "We Ride" is a great song, it's very
original, it flows. It was a hit almost evrywhere except for
North America, and I can'r figure out why people here don't
like it. "Unfaithful", "Final Goodbye", "P.S. (I'm Still Not Over
You)" and "A Million Miles Away" are all beautiful and
emotional, each with their own vibe. The vocals in "A Million
Miles Away" are arguably the best on the album. P.S. (I'm still
Not Over You) has a sweet message and a beat that makes it
something you quietly get down and jam to.
This album brings back the same variety as her debut "Music
Of The Sun", but something Is Different. I Can't figure out if
this album is any better or worse, becuase I still completely
love the "Music Of The Sun" album.
This album, and her first, are amazing. But if you are even a
little bit bothered by her accent (which some people I know
are) then you may not enjoy either. Her accent is always
present and stands out in many tracks, but many people
(including me) like her voice, and if you do to then buy this
album!
