Album Reviews

Three years ago this group released two albums: the country-rock Pure Prairie League and the more rock-oriented Bustin' Out. They then vanished, only to appear suddenly on the singles charts this spring with "Amie," a fresh breath of country air culled from the latter. Which brings us to a regrouped sextet and Two Lane Highway. Former leader Craig Lee Fuller is gone, but George Ed Powell and new lead guitarist Larry Goshorn continue the spirit of the old League. The title cut has a slightly over-raunchy guitar, but the remaining ten stay closer to home. The lazy "Kentucky Moonshine" is a treat reminiscent of the early Lovin' Spoonful, and "I'll Change Your Flat Tire, Merle," Nick Gravenites's clever retort to Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee," gets a lively rendition here. Pure Prairie League's musicianship is always on the mark: John David Call is a fine pedal-steel man, and Michael Connor's electric piano is an imaginative touch. A worthy companion to the likes of the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo and other gems of the genre. (RS 192)
