Prince Paul's fourth solo album is short on the jokey pleasures that usually make his productions instantly lovable, but Itstrumental has its own pleasures: It integrates left-field hooks and hip-hop stereotypes into dark streetscapes that sound like DJ Shadow on a bender (or a crime spree). The skits are too submerged and the beats too diffuse, but here's hoping some enterprising young MC will pick this up and hire Paul at the pay rate he deserves.
