The Politics Of The Business  Hear it Now

RS: 3of 5 Stars

2003

Prince Paul's first two solo albums elevated the between-song hip-hop skit to something of an art form, with comedy sketches and tales of rap-game malfeasance framing ill rhymes and groove-heavy production. Politics draws on the same format of skits, rhymes and beats, with a little less success -- there's no narrative to hold together all the jokes about how fucked up hip-hop is, and it's not as funny, either. But as Dave Chappelle, Erick Sermon and others serve up cheap laughs and good rhymes, Paul updates his signature sound for the new millennium -- where his beats once evoked DJ Shadow picking through a crate of old comedy records, now he sounds like a hook-y, less bling-y Neptunes. Call it ear candy for those soured on the hip-hop biz.
