Album Reviews
For two-plus decades, primal scream have been some of British rock's most ardent shape-shifters, diving into English acid house for 1991's great Screamadelica, then exploring psychedelic dub rock, Stooges-style mayhem and even reggae mysticism. Their ninth album was recorded minus My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, who helped on the last couple of discs, but it features lead screamer and ex-Jesus and Mary Chain drummer Bobby Gillespie, plus Echo & the Bunnymen's Will Sergeant; soundwise, it returns to the scuzz blues of their mid-Nineties work. Though there are political broadsides like "When the Bomb Drops," the band mostly avoids the mythic seriousness of the past in favor of party-ready stuff like "Country Girl" (featuring Gillespie's cheeky whine and big, catchy choruses) and meaty rock sonics. Hard-core fans can start preparing now for a 2010 album, on which Johnny Marr and Jarvis Cocker will join the band for a foray into gypsy techno.
