RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL

After canceling another benefit, Porno for Pyros axes tour

It's good(bye) God's urge. After canceling yet another benefit at an L.A. club, Porno for Pyros entire tour seems to have gone to hell. Warner Bros. Records has issued a statement saying that the band has opted to remain at home to record new material. That may explain the axing of the tour, which was due to start Jan. 15 in Miami, but doesn't address the last minute cancellation of the Whisky benefit last night.

The band's management, Cloud Break, referred all calls to Warner Bros., who in turn would only say the band "wasn't prepared to do it." However, in a message posted on his personal website, bassist Mike Watt today made reference to the fact that PfP's management had been fired.

"I know it's for the best and indirectly, it's a blessing. Gotta bear w/the blows that can wail against one," wrote Watt, adding he would now go and work on his punk rock opera. "All my love to the pornos, they are dear to me and I wish them the best but I gotta check out some funny noise down in the engine room."

Prior to the record company statement and Watt's e-mail, speculation from insiders ranged from lack of rehearsals ("they probably just couldn't get it together") to a return to the well-documented drug problems of certain band members.

Porno for Pyros has quite a history when it comes to cancellations -- over the last few months alone. Aside from the leg of the tour axed when guitarist Peter Distephano's was first diagnosed with cancer last November, the Whisky gig was the second L.A. club benefit scheduled to establish a trust fund for Distephano's daughter. Distephano is reportedly in good health these days and his prognosis is said to be excellent, but friends of the band are nonetheless playing it safe when it comes to the future welfare of his little girl.

The benefit was initially booked at the Roxy, but that venue was rejected when the L.A. Weekly ran an ad for the show complete with the names of Flea and Dave Navarro from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (the latter also a former bandmate of Porno for Pyros frontman Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins in Jane's Addiction), who were "rumored" to be guests. The show wasn't supposed to be listed at all and management blamed the club and pulled the date.

Porno For Pyros, however, were supposed to be the surprise guest at the L.A. radio station KROQ's Acoustic Christmas Concert Dec. 14, but the band was forced to cancel when Farrell elected to remain in Miami to visit with his ailing father. Reports at that time were that Flea, Navarro and the band had been rehearsing four songs for the charity event.

The exact status of the current working relationship with Flea and Navarro has also been a hot topic, and may well have fueled the demise of Porno's management. Rumors and published reports quote Cloud Break personnel as saying Flea and Navarro were likely joining Porno for Pyros for their whole tour. Those reports were denied by the Chili Peppers, who said the two entities would only be recording a song together for the soundtrack to the Howard Stern movie "Private Parts." According to t
