Album Reviews
England's Porcupine Tree are one of the most talented bands you've never heard. During the past decade, they've released ten albums that show dense, dark Seventies prog-rock ambition without ever sounding retro. Their heaviest album yet, In Absentia, lets loose bursts of blistering near-metal noise without ever losing its sophisticated melodic sense and subtle drama. Bassist Colin Edwin, synth man Richard Barbieri and new drummer Gavin Harrison approach the rhythmic fluidity of jazz. If Steven Wilson's enraged guitar solo during "The Sound of Muzak" doesn't engage you, the brooding harmonies will.
