Before their 2002 tune "California" became the theme song to the Fox show The O.C., Phantom Planet were as well known for their drummer -- actor Jason Schwartzman, of Rushmore fame -- as for their music. Now Schwartzman has left, and the L.A. power-pop quartet has redefined itself as a garage-rocking juggernaut on its third album, picking up a few key lessons from the Strokes, of all people. The leadoff track, "The Happy Ending," borrows the New York band's robotic drumming and swooning sing-speak, and "Big Brat" banks on speed-strummed guitar and jittery start-stop rhythms. What Phantom Planet lack in stripped-down hooks they make up for with a full-bodied guitar attack and big, bloodletting choruses on tracks such as "Knowitall" and "Jabberjaw." Lyrically, most songs recall the youthful romanticism of "California," but now it sounds as if Phantom Planet's minds are in a more rugged place.
