Album Reviews
Of the eight songs Paul Westerberg wrote for this soundtrack to a film about animated woodland creatures, there’s not a dud in the bunch, a handful are very good, and all of them sound at least as much like his beloved old band, the Replacements, as any of his recent solo work. To Westerberg’s credit, the lyrics don’t bend over backward to be kiddie-friendly, but the tunes do seem simpler than his usual stuff. This is a good thing: On “Love You in the Fall," “Meet Me in the Meadow" and the ballad “Whisper Me Luck," he tosses off ragged, golden melodies like he’s cooking breakfast. There’s also a Talking Heads oldie here, along with a somnambulant Pete Yorn song and jokey power pop from Cali quartet Deathray. The takeaway: If we can’t get a Replacements reunion, we’ll settle for Sony Pictures Animation putting Westerberg under contract.
