Hummable tunes floated Frampton Comes Alive, but what really sent the fluff into sales orbit was the eager singer's megamarketable charm – a pretty face with a boogie pedigree (Humble Pie), Peter Frampton lent Brit rock-star buzz to '70s singer/songwriter sentimentality – and swiftly thereafter became a ghost. His latest comeback bid, Peter Frampton, is mighty predictable: a fat sound, AOR love fare, workmanlike expertise. "You" and "Shelter Through the Night" find Frampton's underrated guitar chops intact, while "Out of the Blue" features the late Steve Marriott vocalizing with novel restraint; every song exudes sincerity. Titanically harmless, mild beyond measure.
