The phrase "world music" gets thrown at everything from Nigerian grooves to the Buena Vista Social Club -- maybe that's because we Americans think our pop is the norm and that everything else is exotic. But Panjabi MC, also known as the English bhangra DJ Rajinder Rai, sees things differently. For him, his music -- a spinning mix of Indian traditional song and fresh beats -- is the norm, and hip-hop is world music. Jay-Z, who first heard Panjabi MC in a Swiss nightclub, takes center stage on "Beware of the Boys" with a blunt anti-war rhyme. "Jogi" is a monster: a masala of sprinting riffs; a funky, locked-down rhythm; and a Hindi male-female vocal duet that's punctuated by a Fred Durst impersonator hollering, "Come on!" It's all incredibly danceable. Panjabi MC adds hip-hop to his music because he recognizes the connection between rap and bhangra: Both are for serious beat freaks.
