"Summersault" Turns Canada On Its Head

OLP Canadian Tour

While the Smashing Pumpkins spread joy across America on their current charity tour, Our Lady Peace is aiming a little sunshine at the forgotten Canadian provinces. |

On Wednesday, the Toronto-based quartet announced plans to launch the premiere jaunt of Summersault '98, a traveling mini-festival that will play the nooks and crannies of Canada where few other package tours have ventured before. The three-date festival will feature sporadic cameos from Garbage, The Crystal Method, Fuel and various others handpicked by Our Lady Peace.

"We sat down and discussed who they have seen and who they like, and this is basically a list of artists they have always wanted to play with," the band's manager, Eric Lawrence, told JAMTV on Thursday. "We are doing this because some of the big festivals come to [Canada's bigger cities], but few of them go beyond that to Eastern Canada."

Summersault will target Newfoundland and New Brunswick, the forgotten corners of Canada that rarely catch a glimpse of local rockers Our Lady Peace. For the last three weeks, the 6-year-old post-grunge group has been touring Europe in support of the 1997 Columbia Records release, Clumsy. The band last played Canada in the winter of 1997, when they opened for the Rolling Stones in Quebec City. (Anni Layne)

Here's where Summersault '98 will play this summer:

  • Aug. 23 - Molson Park, Barrie, Ontario [Our Lady Peace, Garbage, Crystal Method, Fuel, Hayden, Gandharvas and I Mother Earth]
  • Sept. 3 - Bowring Park, St. John's, Newfoundland [Our Lady Peace, Sloan, Moist, Esthero, Bucket Truck, I Mother Earth]
  • Sept. 5 - Shediac Cam-Am Speedway, Parlee Beach, New Brunswick [Our Lady Peace, Sloan, Moist, Esthero, Bucket Truck, I Mother Earth]
