Years from now, the pop hit "How Bizarre" will be remembered fondly as a summer-defining single that actually sounds great. A supremely catchy tune that combines hip-hop and dance rhythms with a melody and instrumental passages inspired by the likes of Herb Alpert and Burt Bacharach, it leaps out of the radio and all but compels listeners to move.

\\Unfortunately, that's more than can be said of the Wednesday night performance by OMC, the New Zealand act that wrote the song. OMC is the abbreviation for Otara Millionaires Club, the group incarnation of the New Zealand-born, half-Maori Pauly Fuemana. A dusky voiced singer/rapper who slightly resembles a young Tony Curtis, Fuemana has the looks, sex appeal and dance moves to register strongly on MTV. With his songwriting collaborator, producer Alan Jansson, he has crafted an engaging album that contains more than one memorable song.

\\In concert, however, the music never really took off. Performing with a five-piece band that included horns, a DJ and a female backup singer, Fuemana couldn't approximate his record's texture and complexity. Many of the instrumental portions were drowned out by oppressive pre-recorded rhythm tracks and even Fuemana's vocals failed to command attention. The crowd watched in quiet anticipation but only rushed the stage to dance when it heard the distinctive beginning of "How Bizarre."

\\Still, such songs as "Angel in Disguise" and "Right On" are too catchy to be entirely buried by inferior arrangements, and Fuemana certainly seems to have the talent and charisma to parlay his one-hit wonder status into a lasting care
