With their staccato guitars and Queen-like bouquets of vocal harmony, OK Go want to be this year's smart power-pop find, a quartet whose talky, acidic songs locate a middle ground between the bubbly irreverence of the Raspberries and the fragile melodies of the La's. Sometimes the Chicago band pulls it off, as on the dreamy reverie "Shortly Before the End" or the jackhammering rhythm-guitar jolt "You're So Damn Hot," one of several worshipful odes to the prototypical unattainable woman. Too often, though, the band's intricate, tightly scripted songs are diminished by Damian Kulash's bratty singing style. You know something is off when a pricelessly droll line such as "mediocre people do exceptional things all the time," from "What to Do," winds up not sounding clever, as intended, but petty and mean.
