Eminem protege Obie Trice was shot Saturday morning around 1 a.m. while driving along the Lodge Freeway in his hometown of Detroit. The hardcore rapper, 28, was struck by a bullet after someone in another car fired into the back window of Trice's vehicle.

Trice managed to exit the freeway in the suburb of Southfield, where his girlfriend -- who suffered no injuries -- flagged police. He was taken to Providence Hospital, where he was treated then later released.

Police are investigating the incident but no suspects have yet been named.

In 2002, Trice was featured on Eminem's blockbuster third album, The Eminem Show ("Drips") and the 8 Mile soundtrack ("Love Me," "Adrenalie Rush," "Rap Name"). Trice's debut album, Cheers, released the following year, was executive-produced by Eminem. The record peaked at Number Five on the pop chart.
