Electric Version  Hear it Now

RS: 3of 5 Stars

This Vancouver collective debuted in 2000 with the excellent Mass Romantic, an indie-rock masterstroke that served up punchy power pop ala the Cars, Todd Rundgren and Big Star. Electric Version banks on the same combo of perfect harmonies, revved-up guitars and rinky-dink keyboards, with alt-country chanteuse Neko Case again contributing clear-as-a-bell vocals that sound great alongside the falsetto swoops and dry crooning of Dan Bejar and frontman Carl Newman. Despite their hookiness, the thirteen uniformly upbeat tracks do sound a little too samey at times -- even when the Pornographers mope about love, it sounds like a pro forma gesture. But that's a quibble: When beach weather hits, Electric Version will no doubt prove one of the year's best summertime rock records.
