Since their Jackson 5-fueled hit "O.P.P." in 1991, Naughty by Nature - Treach, Vinnie and KayGee - have blended Top Forty grooves with hardcore-mix-tape subject matter. Eight years later, hip-hop has crossed over to them, from Puffy to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. On their latest studio album, Naughty don't tamper with the formula: "Live or Die" marries a gangsta's shakedown ("I thought I told you/Have my money/You got until sunrise/Or lose your life") to a soothing R&B melody; "Live Then Lay" turns a hustler's call to arms ("They'll lock your body/Ask Gotti/Grab your shotties/It's Illuminati") into a bouncing party hook. Elsewhere, they borrow funk lite from DeBarge and update classics from Tenor Saw, LL Cool J, Run-DMC and Public Enemy. With Treach's fleet-tongued poetry, Vin's straightforward boasts and KayGee's ball-bearing-smooth production, Nature's Fury is as charged as an electrical storm. (RS 812)
