When Radiohead began to explore electronic textures on Kid A, it fell to upstart U.K. bands such as Coldplay, Travis, Starsailor and Muse to provide the world with disconsolate, Pink Floyd-worthy guitar rock. So give Muse, from the English town of Teignmouth, some credit for adopting Radiohead's bombastic Bends approach and adding prog-rock-style instrumental virtuosity. "Apocalypse Please," the turbulent opening cut, is stitched with almost Liberace-esque piano pounding and fluttering guitar arpeggios. It's too bad that vocalist Matt Bellamy doesn't bring as much ingenuity to his singing -- on brooding, quiet tunes such as "Ruled by Secrecy," it's as if Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley are the only singers he's ever heard.

Every time i hear someone say that muse sounds like Radiohead, and how they copy off of Radiohead, i want to vomit. I mean Muse does draw on Radoihead as an influence, but COME ON! Tell me what Radiohead song sounds like stockholm syndrome or hysteria. Rolling Stone, sometimes i really can't believe the reviews you give.

it's unbelievable how these reviewers can't accept Muse as a band but rather just another Radiohead. This album is the best album I have ever heard. The power house track that is Butterflies and Hurricanes cannot be knocked. Such anthems as Time is Running Out and Hysteria force the listener to go into a state of awe and admiration for the pure musical genius that is Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenhomle and Dominic Howard. Blackout and Ruled by Secrecy allows the listener to stop and think just before tracks like The Small Print smack you in the face as you realise why Muse are able to sell out 2 nights at Wembley Stadium....Enough said.

I've never been a "fan" of a band. It took about 15 listens - but I'm now a fan of this band. 3 mates making 1 hell of a fantastic racket - quite glorious. (the sublime production obviously helps) I notice that Rob Kemps review was written on April the 1st; April Fools day... we're his coments a joke? To comment so "unfairly" about Matthew Bellamys vocals makes me wonder whether Mr. Kemp is actaully qualified to be a music "critique". If you truly love music that is played by actual musicians - you will probably love this album. (Black Holes & Revelations is just as good)6 stars... Easily. PS: RK - if you saw this band live, I believe you would actually crap your pants... Luke Warm - Dubai UAE.

Who are these people rating Muse's albums for ROlling Stone?

I've listened to Radiohead, this is not Radiohead. This.Is.Muse.

Muse brings us a classical sound mixed with progressive rock and two of the best guitar riffs ever (Stockholm Syndrome, Hysteria), and delivers with witty songs like Thoughts and a Dying Atheist, Butterflies and Hurricanes, and especially Tsp. Tsp has a very unique sound, and powerful lyrics.

Amazing. The album of the 2004. Matt Bellamy is an extremely talented guitarist to understate this fact completely. He was named as 29th Best Guitarist of All Time by "Top Guitar" Magazine, and "Top Guitar" also had a Top 100 Best Guitar Riffs of All Time, and three Muse riffs were featured. Dom is also a great drummer and the underappreciated bassist, Chris, rounds out Muse's amazing sound. It is hard to believe that such loud music can be produced by a three-piece band. I just saw them in the city, and they are not to be missed live!

As easy as it sounds to sit here and put into words everything Muse and their sophomore album Absolution means to me, I'm actually finding it difficult to fit their genius and talent into words. To be honest I was a big Muse listener in the Showbiz era, but the first time a friend made me listen to Absolution its like a lightswitch was flipped in my very soul. I grew up listening to the greats; Queen, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, etc., and listening to Muse do what they do best I can't help but feel the spirit of all these artists in every song. The album opens with "Apocalypse Please's" epic introduction and sweeping vocals and doesn't stop rolling over the listener until the last note. Lead singer and genius guitarist Matt Bellamy's doom and gloom lyrics and apocalyptic themes fuse with the bombastic drums and stomping basslines to form a Masterpiece that I'm sure was difficult to follow up. There are no filler songs on this album, and its best to free up an afternoon and let every single one of these songs sweep over you in their glory. The other half of Muse's sheer musical genius comes from their live performances. I had seen videos on the internet of their live shows in Europe but somehow I couldn't grasp the beauty and grand nature of the show, that is until I saw them myself. It was by far the best live band I have seen in my 22 years and I will never forget the experience. Standout tracks on this album are "Sing for Absolution," "Stockholm Syndrome," and "Butterflies and Hurricanes" (whose piano solo absolutely blew my fucking mind, especially when performed live). There's nothing more I can say besides go and buy this album as soon as you can, it will change the way you look at alternative rock forever.

Fantastic Album. Strong eclectic mix of sounds from a band that
makes intelligent choices. Not your everyday group of new-
comers; these guys have staying power, and if this album is any
indication of their talent, there will be a lot more from them in
the coming years. Buy it, and enjoy.

Amazing rock album for the new millenium. One of the few modern rockers that is good the whole way through. Although, still hints that this band is capable of so much more.
