Mudhoney Shows 'Em How It's Done

Seattle Forefathers Prepare a New Disc

The musical significance of Mudhoney may be lost on the hordes of youngsters who watch them open for Pearl Jam later this summer, but that won't stop the forefathers of Seattle rock from pounding it into their heads. |

Founded one year after Nirvana, Mudhoney defined the Northwest sound with their debut single, "Touch Me, I'm Sick," which was parodied in the 1992 Cameron Crowe film, Singles. Now, the pioneers are back -- not only to pound it out with their "grunge" successors, but also to release their first album in three years.

Tomorrow Hit Today will first see the light of day on Sept. 22, just two weeks after Mudhoney plays a long-awaited headlining stint at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. Recorded at Litho -- Pearl Jam's studio in Seattle -- and Ardent Studios in Memphis, the band's seventh release was produced by Jim Dickinson, who has previously worked with the Rolling Stones and the Replacements.

Mixer David Bianco contributed to the customary distortion, which Mudhoney will take on the road in October during a solo tour that is still undetermined at this time. Regardless of Mudhoney's close musical and physical proximity to Pearl Jam, a spokesman for the band said there were "no collaborators that we can talk about."

In related news, the Pearl Jam camp has once again shuffled its opening band line-up. The critic's darling -- Sean Lennon -- has been added to the all-star Seattle show on July 22, which will also feature the Wallflowers. Chicago's classic team, Cheap Trick, will also take over for Iggy Pop on a Aug. 20 show in Montreal. (Anni Layne)
