Album Reviews
When Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott weds hip-hop and R&B, she not only avoids the pitfalls tripping up so many of her colleagues, she also finds new inspiration in the union. On her remarkable debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, the songwriter-turned-artist raps, sings, writes and (along with her partner, Timbaland) produces. "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," her hit single, borrows a sample from Ann Peebles' '70s classic "I Can't Stand the Rain." Elliott sings the seductive hook herself, adding easy rhymes and hard-girl attitude; the result creeps and thunders just right, as do nearly all the tracks on the album. Supa Dupa Fly should be required listening for the growing number of artists looking for musical bliss in the marriage of rhymes with soul melodies.
