Unless you manage to ignore him, you may very well love Mika Penniman. You may also find him incredibly annoying. On his debut, the Lebanese-born Brit serves up huge, ultraflamboyant razzle-dazzle, often transmitted through pounded piano or his ear-damaging falsetto. Songs like the U.K. hit "Grace Kelly" are plenty catchy, but they pack enough schmaltz and club-you-over-the-head sonics to make Scissor Sisters seem like Joan Freakin' Baez. Mika can be funny -- even if "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)" inevitably recalls "Fat Bottomed Girls," it's chuckleworthy -- and "Relax (Take It Easy)" is pretty good disco. But on the couple of cuts when Mika's campy steez isn't all up in your grill, he's boring: Both "Any Other World" and the sub-sub-Elton "Erase" are snoozers. This is hate-yourself-in-the-morning pop.
