Album Reviews
Midtown are four Jersey boys who tend to take things really hard. A sampling of song titles from their fourth album: "God Is Dead," "The Tragedy of the Human Condition" and "Empty Like the Ocean." Lest you mistake them for depressives, however, their emo attack is full of signs of life, including speed-punk bashing ("So Long as We Keep Our Bodies Numb We're Safe"); dark, spidery melodicism ("Is It Me? Is It True?"); and soft, lush melancholia ("Waiting for the News"). Too many of the songs rely on standard shout-heavy, screamo bloodletting, but latch onto their moody hooks and rhythmic twists and turns, and you'll understand what Midtown are aiming for: dead-end catharsis for the dewy-eyed generation.
