It had become a money-maker, and Farrell began to sense new pressures behind the original inspiration to throw a great party, which finally led to the booking of speed-metal originators Metallica as the top-billed act on the 1996 festival over his objections. "I have nothing against Metallica, other than the fact that they were a different beast, they're not an alternative rock group," says Farrell. "I just felt that they weren't the best choice — they were centered on commercial and metal. I was outvoted, and they pushed their agenda forward on me, and that year I backed off and didn't participate in Lollapalooza."
