On Master of Puppets' "Damage, Inc.," James Hetfield lays out Metallica's business plan: "Go against the grain until the end," he bellows, gleefully adding, "Life ain't for you/And we're the cure." The target of the band's bottomless rage in the mid-Eighties was Van Halen's party-rock spawn. With their third album, the self-anointed "anti-Motley Crue" did their worst to carpet-bomb L.A.'s Sunset Strip while broadening the thrash-metal palette. "Battery" opens the album with a Spanish-guitar passage. You can almost see the tumbleweeds roll past at high noon before the band rides in on Lars Ulrich's galloping rhythm -- Hetfield barking threats, Kirk Hammett zinging off flurries of moaning notes. More or less every song is about death. With hindsight, it is tempting to read Puppets' morbid lyrics as an omen; bassist Cliff Burton died mere months after the album's release in a tour-bus accident. But, really, with music this ferocious, what else was Hetfield going to sing about: dancing the night away?

this is one of the best metal records ever. The reason this album is so great may not be even its songs but it the first album really without Dave Mustaine cause when you look at Ride The Lightning it has some of his song ideas. Don't get me wrong i love Megadeth but this was the first album Kirk could really show his skills. Non of these songs are short but could never try to get this to be a shorter album with the same effect. My last praise for this album is its the last to feature Cliff Burton, may he rest in peace, on bass. This album is a true must have for any metal head, metallica fan, or any lover of good music.

Well, when I first listened to Master of puppets, I thought,"What the..?" Heavy riffs & a beautiful harmony section??!!
I think it's Metallica's best record ever!
It's like a novel:
As you can see in the cover the so-called God is controlling some dead soldiers, which, I think refers to "Disposable hereoes" song...
"Military domain". The whole album is about
"How horrible is being controlled by a higher power", & beside professional lyrics, brilliant
Chromatic melodies mixed with harmonies, gives the album a full of chaos & confusion felling.
It starts with battery, which's an overview to our sick society, when James says "battery is found in me!", you know what's goin' on !
Then Master of puppets, a truely master piece which talks about drug addiction, or domain!
Reminds me of Queen's Bohemian rhapsody!Multi-section song!! brilliant!
"The thing that should not be" which's inspired by Lovecraft's "Shadow over insmouth" story, & of course is about social control.
"Sanitarium", one of album's highest moments,
tells you the whole matter with it's beautiful solid riff...madness & assylum controll. In the end you can here a beautiful minor-middle eastern riff!
"Disposable heroes"...see the cover sleeve!
"Lepper Messiah" is also about religion, & false beliefs..Another horrible domain. This songs too heavy which makes you feel as the composer wants you to!
"Orion", which's another masterpiece I suppose... Clif you did great!
Orion...maybe God's controll?!
Finally the epilogue, which's "Damage Inc.".
Sounds almost like battery, but this one talks about the "Media domain" I suppose, while having those lyrics ! Metallica has always wanted to fight against the Hair metal bands!
Anyway, the album, both musically & lyrically is a masterpiece & a classic.
Sometimes reminds me of Bach!
