Album Reviews
Once upon a time in the Eighties, the Meat Puppets made more tuneful post-hardcore albums than three stoned Arizonans had any right to. Though this comeback celebrates the parole of ex-junkie bassist Cris Kirkwood, tuneful it ain't. Best track: the trance-y death-cowpunk finale. Whoopee.

ROBERT CHRISTGAU sucks and should be fired. Wow. This may not be the Pupetts' best work but what do you expect for the first effort after years of brothers Meat being separated by the powers that be. It's a great album and it brings me comfort to hear some new material from this great band. Wow, BOB, get a real job.

The absolute worst you can say about this album is that it isn't the Pups' best. It's superior to about 99.999% of music out there by a lot.
The Meat Puppets are a quirky band. They're also an important band. Why have a disinterested reviewer phone in a shallow slam?
This is a great album and if you like the Puppets at all you should go ahead and buy with confidence.

I'm not going to say that this was the best Meat Puppets cd very put out or even that I don't skip some of the songs to get to the ones I enjoy but it still has some enjoyable songs and moments. My review of the reviewer is that this review was phoned in with not meat. You basically said it sucked and nothing else. If that's the best you got I suggest you cash the 401k in and retire.

Ive been a long time Meat Puppets fan, but had no idea this had come out until I saw that there was this shitty review. I figured that they had continued in the direction of Golden Lies (which wasnt terrible, but lacked original members, inspiration, etc.) I was curious to see why the album got a bad review. Obviously its cause Bob is a bag of douche maybe he should change his name to Bod (short for bag of douche). Ive never even heard the damn thing but Ill give it five stars anyway. Your parents should be ashamed of you. Thanks to everyone else for actually reviewing the album and shitting on the guy who got paid to review it.

Who is Bob's boss? I think Bob has been using his expense account to party rather than do his job. But no surprise, Bob's got other things to do.
This album is solid and has far more depth than most popular music being released in this day and age; an obvious SCHWAG review.
I can at least thank Rolling Stone for the forum that allows one to criticize the critic.
GET TO WORK BOB AND STOP GOOFING AROUND!!!haha

I had to register to rollingstone.com for one reason: to respond to the pathetic review of the Meat Puppets new CD. With all of the absolute garbage being released lately, most of which gets at the very least three stars from this rag, how bad should a release have to be to get a star and a half and barely a mention from the pompous legend in his own mind Christgau? What did you do Bob, listen to the first 10 seconds of each track before pooping out this "review" and calling it a day? Like every other MP realease, this one grows on you more and more with each listen. This is one those records where you get hooked on a song and can't get it out of your head for the entire day. If you are a Puppets fan, this is a must have. If you've never heard of them before, you will be a fan once you've put this CD in your regular rotation. I reserve 5 stars for only the top 20 of all time, so I give this one 4 and a half.

Shame on you Robert for that horrible review. Judging by what you said, it sounds like you didn't even hear the CD. I've been a puppets fan since the late 80s and this record is up there with them. From Fly Like the Wind to Light the Fire, each song is strong and enjoyable to listen too. Meat Puppets are back right where they left off! Welcome back!

rolling stone has lost it as a place
to receive serious album reviews. whoever
pays them the most money gets the best review.
the meat puppets latest is one of the freshest,
most innovative records in a long time.
melodic, original and simple, this album
revives what a rock band should strive for.
fuck the bullshit power pop, emo, black eyeliner posers that rolling stone loves to bone. the meat puppets are back and i just saw them live and they kick all those festival lineup acts to the moon. keep it coming kirkwoods.
