Album Reviews
Mavis Staples, the grande dame of the legendary Staple Singers, has spent much of her solo career striving for pop crossover, but here she revisits the earthy, guitar-centered soul-gospel sound that made her group such a consciousness-raising force in the 1960s. Talk about an overdue return: She's inspired to lean back and roar with all her heart, and though the songs of Faith aren't uniformly top-shelf, her performances definitely are. Whether singing an abiding classic ("Will the Circle Be Unbroken") or a more extroverted rumble ("Ain't No Better Than You"), Staples shows sheer vocal authority, and she can still deliver a spine-chilling "amen."
