In April 1982, Gaye was living in exile in Brussels and suffering writer's block. One night, he and biographer David Ritz were discussing pornography (Gaye had a large cache of S&M literature). "I suggested that Marvin needed sexual healing," Ritz wrote. Gaye put the idea to a reggae-style beat by sideman Brown. The result: Gaye's last Top Five hit before his death in 1984.
