Reprising all twelve cuts from Maroon 5's 2002 debut, Live: Friday the 13th is mostly a victory lap for these hardworking popsters -- complete with copious girly screams from the audience. But if you're aching for a nine-minute, jammy rendition of "Sweetest Goodbye" or loose-limbed takes on hits that were fairly jumpin' in their studio versions -- not to mention the accompanying DVD of the same show -- you've come to the right piece of merch.

As much of a big M5 fan I am, Songs About Jane is not as great as this CD. One thing in particular drew my eye and ears to this disk: the raw sound of it. In concert, these guys were just able to really let loose on these songs and improve them to the point that I have not stopped listening to it since I bought it three months ago. There's an energy inherent in the instrument work and Adam Levine's voice that was not heard on Songs About Jane. There's almost... grit coming through each note, the shadows of lust and love and pain that nestle right in your heart, and will never leave.
