In an effort to draw more attention to Latin music, the Grammys
have also expanded the number of Latin music categories from five
to seven. This fall will also mark the debut of the Latin Grammys.
The latest batch of performers reflects the broader spectrum of
Grammy categories: jazz luminaries Sanchez and Valdes received nods
for Best Latin Jazz Performance (Sanchez for his album Latin
Soul and Valdes for his Religion of the Congo). The
smooth-crooning Ferrer continues the Buena Vista Social Club's
streak of awards and accolades with a nomination for Best
Traditional Tropical Latin Performance for The Buena Vista
Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer.
The Academy also announced that one piano man will honor another,
as Billy Joel has been tapped to host an all-star tribute to Elton
John, who will receive the Legend Award.
New presenters for the awards program were also announced. 'N Sync,
Busta Rhymes, Phil Collins, Macy Gray and Ray Romano join
previously announced presenters Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera,
Mary J. Blige, Vince Gill and Neil Diamond.
