Album Reviews
Two simultaneously horrendous name associations may be the only burden facing England's Mansun on this, their rather swell debut album. Dynamic, with matching good hooks and looks, this Manchester-bred quartet oozes commercial appeal. Grey Lantern boasts II scarily radio-friendly tracks (including such U.K. hits as "She Makes My Nose Bleed" and "Wide Open Space"), each cleverly written and arranged by singer/songwriter and producer Paul Draper, each dripping with oddly appealing, sexy vitriol. "He'll be your tax-loss lover from Liverpool," sings Draper in "Taxloss," a '90s rewrite of "Taxman" which, all things considered, is better than Mansun covering "Helter Skelter" any day. (RS 767)
