You will fight through rough fidelity to roast in this electric-blues fire, just as you probably had to battle up to the bar at the Chicago clubs where these bootleg-style tapes were made, between 1963 and 1968. But Magic Sam Maghett (above) -- an exuberant singer and thrilling guitarist whose rhythmic attack, heavy with tremolo, and spearing notes combined the heated discipline of Buddy Guy with the ecstasy of Jimi Hendrix -- died just shy of fame, of a heart attack at thirty-two in 1969, so these raw pieces of his brief life are precious metal. Novices, start with Sam's studio classics, West Side Soul (1968) and Black Magic (1969). Swing back here to experience his magic on a local bandstand.
